The Connection with Joseph ‘Joey’ Wallace, Managing Director, Multhana Property Services

Tell us about your organisation?
Multhana Property Services is an Indigenous business that was established to provide employment, upskilling, and career development opportunities for Indigenous and socioeconomically disadvantaged people.

‘Multhana’ translates to ‘coming together to help each other’ in the Kalkadoon language, referring to our mutually beneficial relationship with our clients.

What do you like about the wider South Bank Precinct?
One thing I’ve always liked about South Bank is that there is always something new going on. Whether it be a new restaurant or new construction to upgrade a space, seeing the growth in the area is always exciting for me. With the 2032 Brisbane Olympics approaching, I hope to see Indigenous businesses gain more recognition and representation in the projects leading up to the Games.

What was your first job?
I worked in Indigenous affairs at Centrelink in Ingham, Far North Queensland. This inspired me to start a career in Indigenous social policy within government and private industries, to create institutional change.

What are your words of wisdom?
People buy from people, so talk to people. It’s all about networking and putting yourself out there. I’m also a big believer that if you do the right thing, good things will happen for you.

What would you like to see Brisbane achieve in the leadup/beyond 2032?
In the leadup to 2032 and beyond, I would like to see more Indigenous businesses land sizeable contracts within the Brisbane business community. Indigenous employment is a key indicator of strong economic and social development.

June 3, 2022 – Celebrating Members, Community, The Connection

What is your business?
TAKASHIYA is an authentic Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar offering the first omakase experience in Brisbane.

How many people work at your business?
We have around 10 people in the operation of the business.

What do you want BSB members to know about you or your business?
Chef Takashi, has over 40 years experience (including 8 years in Japan before migrating to Australia) specialising in crafting the best nigiri with his special sushi rice and impeccable knife skill. He is passionate about presenting the best produce to his customers. Chef Takashi often visits the fish markets to select the freshest local seafood and sources ingredients which we rarely see in Australia from his trusted suppliers from Japan. Chef Takashi also travels to Tasmania to source fresh wasabi and truffle. Alongside with Chef Kazu, the duo cooks and serves in front of the 12-seater omakase counter offering 16 course “the ultimate gourmet Japanese dining experience” as described in The Courier Mail.

TAKASHIYA opens for omakase from Thursdays to Mondays for 2 sessions (5:30pm and 8:00pm) as well as Sunday lunch.

For a more casual dining and drinking experience, TAKASHIYA also offers Japanese specialty cocktails, whiskies and sake as well as A la Carte menu under the 24-seater cherry blossom bar.

What do you like about the South Bank Precinct?
South Bank Precinct is an iconic destination for tourists and locals and because of that, I have met a lot of people from different backgrounds in South Bank which I really enjoy. South Bank also has the best view of the skyline of Brisbane.

What has surprised you the most about the Covid experience?
A lot of businesses (especially hospitality) were hit by Covid but it was also interesting to see how people’s perception towards dining has changed (e.g. more takeaway and delivered meals). I was lucky enough to start up my business during Covid as people still wanted my food during lockdown. Through social media, more people know about my food and that was also how TAKASHIYA has come together and opened in September 2021 during this unprecedented time.

What are your words of wisdom?
Keep calm, think positively and work hard.

Top Drawer Finance Solutions is a local business, based in Boundary Street, West End.  We do all types of lending.  Home & investment loans, commercial, self-managed super funds, car finance, construction, first home buyers, business lending low doc, bridging loans and asset finance. We service clients Australia wide and internationally. Together we have more than 45 years combined experience in the banking & finance industry.

What do you like about the South Bank Precinct? In my view. South Brisbane/West End area is the last bastion of cool in Brisbane.  I love the collective diversity, the people, the restaurants, bars and shops.  I also love the more colourful characters; you meet on the Streets every day. It has a great vibe!

What has surprised you the most about the Covid experience? The world will never be the same again.  COVID has had a dramatic impact globally and locally.  I actually think that is has highlighted what a great leadership team we have at both a State & Federal level.  COVID has highlighted the need to appreciate our health, security, freedom and loved ones.  Most importantly it has shown us how lucky we are to be living in this beautiful city and wonderful country.

What are your words of wisdom?  Always have good manners, and always be kind and humble.

Woollam is Australia’s oldest privately owned construction company – established 136 years ago in 1884 with grassroots right here in Brisbane. Thomas Woollam built the original Breakfast Creek hotel!

What do you like about the South Bank Precinct?

How family-friendly it is. Most of my Saturday’s are spent playing ‘crocodiles’ in the kid’s fountains with my two-year-old, followed by a smoothie and donut on the lush grass outside Nodo and soaking in the city view.

What has surprised you the most about the Covid experience?

How quickly we can adapt, and how scared I have become of sneezing in public.

What are your words of wisdom?

Choose family over work.
