South Bank’s Very Own Dedicated Portrait Gallery

The precinct is set to welcome a new portrait gallery, opening in March 2026 at Stockwell’s 51 Fish Lane.

The Brisbane Portrait Gallery will be a new permanent gallery dedicated to portraiture, showcased through year-round exhibitions, events and workshops.

Stockwell will run the gallery, with the Brisbane Portrait Prize as exhibition and curatorial partner.

South Bank Smart Bins Recycling Milestone

South Bank Corporation has reached a key milestone with their Containers for Change (COEX) Smart Bins, diverting over 65,000 containers from landfill last financial year.

Introduced in November 2023, these solar-powered Smart Bins were the first of their kind in Queensland, making it easier to recycle at South Bank.

Members wanting to use the Smart Bins can find them on Grey Street and in the parklands.

Griffith University Named ‘Australian Olympic Pathway University’

BSB member, Griffith University and the Australian Olympic Committee has announced a new partnership which will name the Queensland education institution an “Australian Olympic Pathway University”. 

This partnership will result in increased financial and academic support for student athletes, recognising Griffith University’s longstanding commitment to supporting elite athletes. 

Griffith left an indelible mark on the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, setting a new benchmark for university sports achievements on the global stage. With 50 athletes competing, comprising students, alumni, and swimming squad members, the University contributed 36 medals including 12 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze.

Brisbane Festival Announce New Artistic Director

Brisbane Festival has announced Ebony Bott as the new Artistic Director to deliver the 2026 festival. 

BSB would like to recognise outgoing Artistic Director Louise Bezzina, presenting her final festival in 2025 after six years at the helm. 

Brisbane Festival will return to the precinct from 5-27 September.
