South Bank Smart Bins Recycling Milestone

South Bank Corporation has reached a key milestone with their Containers for Change (COEX) Smart Bins, diverting over 65,000 containers from landfill last financial year.

Introduced in November 2023, these solar-powered Smart Bins were the first of their kind in Queensland, making it easier to recycle at South Bank.

Members wanting to use the Smart Bins can find them on Grey Street and in the parklands.

This week, BSB held a fun and informative session on Smart Waste Strategies for Business. Thank you to our expert panel for sharing valuable insights with our members. 

BSB staff takeaways from session included:
– Use re-purposing marketplaces to source equipment – Warpit & Aspire for office furniture.
– Download and use the Recycle Mate app – take a picture of any item and the app will tell you the correct bin it goes in.
– Bring suppliers into the sustainability conversation.
– Get the whole team involved – from identifying waste streams to celebrating the wins together.
– Behavioural changes that make a difference, including using Containers for Change to donate to charities chosen by staff – share the data on donations so that the team can feel involved.

Promoting connections throughout the City, BSB is pleased to see that the City’s newest pedestrian bridge is officially open. The Kangaroo Point Bridge links Kangaroo Point to the CBD, making it easier to walk or ride between the precinct and CBD.

To commemorate the next 25 years of growth and success, Business South Bank (BSB) launched a new collaborative initiative The Sustainability Pledge, the first of its kind for a precinct in Queensland.
 
The Sustainability Pledge is a collective call of action by BSB members to ‘pledge’ to consider the environment, to be inclusive, and to create a healthy precinct.

The Pledge celebrates sustainability champions and supports those starting their sustainability journey.
 
As part of the Pledge, BSB will:

  • Create forums for ideas sharing
  • Connect people for mutual benefit – an expert in one area may be the student
    in another
  • Provide access to resources/information
  • Share the vision for the precinct with City and State Government and other stakeholders

  • Sharing information about your sustainability initiatives and achievements.

South Bank Corporation and Containers for Change have partnered together and launched new solar-powered recycling Smart Bins in South Bank.

These Smart Bins are a first in Queensland with bar code reading technology to only accept containers eligible for 10-cent refunds.
